With my shiny new computer in place I begun re-recording the overdubs I had lost with the crash, starting on 31st October 2006. First I added additional rhythm and lead guitars to "Dumbing Down". I doubled the main rhythm guitar to thicken up the sound since I always wanted this to open the CD. For this I used the Telecaster and a Treble Booster. The lead guitar was my old Les Paul with a little Wah Wah. On "Remember My Name" I also used the Les Paul for lead guitar using a home made Fuzz Pedal. "Losing Streak" just needed a lead guitar so I used the Strat and an overdrive pedal while on "Tell Me Something New" I used my Yamaha Pacifica 12-String with a compressor and tremolo pedal. Still all home made pedals apart from the Wah Wah! This time I had a better idea of my parts and spent a bit more time getting the guitar sounds. Although the old versions had sounded good these ones sounded even better (I can confirm this with two mp3s I found from the original versions). |
Later that day I re-recorded the acoustic overdubs then much later some keyboards. Not owning any classic keyboards I had to rely on the virtual version inside the computer. On "Tell Me Something New" I played a virtual Hammond Organ ("da organ"), on "Busted Surfboard, Broken Head" I used a sampled Wurtlitzer Piano while I used a sampled Fender Rhodes on "No Suprises". On the latter I also used a virtual String Synth. Over the next two days I recorded Lead Vocals to all the songs. I recorded a number of takes for each, usually using the last take and bits of the earlier ones where I felt the performance was not strong enough. Apart from a simple ebow guitar part on "Remember My Name" that was it for now. One more overdub: 18th Feb. 2007 In February Liz Smythe was over visiting my girlfriend, Liz and I persuaded her to add backing vocals to "No Suprises" since it was just a few lines. Liz has sung a lot for the duo and myself but lives too far away to make regular contributions now. |

3rd Tracking Session: 11th Mar. 2007 Sadly, John Wilson was not available to play Bass on the next recording session though Glenn was able to drum for me. I realised the solution would be for me to play bass and have someone else play guitar. Sam Beveridge played 2nd guitar for my 40th birthday party and agreed to help out. Once again we recorded at Pease Pottage Rehearsal studios, in a different room this time. I was very pleased with the recordings. Sam and Glenn both played excellently and despite the fact that I do not consider myself a bass player (despite playing for over 20 years) I was pleased with my own performance. The songs we recorded that day were "Driving Into The Sunset", "In Your Arms Again", "Under The Moon" and "Just A Man". [We tried a run through of "Don't Call Me Again" but I had not given Glenn a copy before the session and we were not rehearsed enough]. |

Sam Beverdidge played guitar on four songs on the new album, including a solo on "In Your Arms Again". |

Once I stopped reading the musc and words and just played I started to feel a bit more like a real bass player... |
Overdub Sessions: March - April 2007 I added a second guitar to "Under The Moon" and solo using my Telecaster and then an electric 12-string to "Driving Into The Sunset". I played these through the little Epiphone 5 watt valve amp pictured aboved. I also used my Telecaster for the 2nd rhythm guitar in "Just A Man", once agan pulling out my favourite home made fuzz pedal for the solo. Keyboard overdubs on "Driving Into The Sunset", "Under The Moon" and "In Your Arms Again" were recorded with my virtual Hammond organ again. For "In Your Arms Again" I added slide guitar with my old 70s Strat, through my Simple Compressor with the Epipone amp on full volume in an attempt to get a Ry Cooder tone. A couple of weeks later I re-recorded the 12-String solo on "Driving Into The Sunset" since I had extended the arrangement and wanted to add more lead at the end. |

On 5th April Clare Jeffrey and Sam came round to my house to add backing vocals to "Under The Moon", "Tell Me Something New", "Driving Into The Sunset", "Remember My Name" and "Just A Man". I now had over half the album completed and this just left two tracks in record. By then I had decided againt a double electric / acoustic album and just use what I had. "Don't Call Me Again" had started life on the banjo asd a folky song. I had joined an acoustic project with John Bailey, once the guitarist in my solo band. The project fell apart before we got round to playing my songs (apart from "Losing Streak"). I decided to record a demo as a reggae version as a complete contrast to the acoustic version. "Call Me Back Next Week" was also already demoed fully. I decided to use these as the basis of new versions and would have Paul Whittngton overdub drums onto them. I would keep just the bass and keyboards and re-record all the guitar parts. I transferred these to the mobile set-up and set a date to record with Paul. |
Clare Jeffrey (above) and Sam Beveridge helped me out on backing vocals on the new CD. |
